Bisaccia

Situated at the altitude of 885 m, Bisaccia is a small municipality of almost four thousand inhabitants. The charm of its ancient origins relate to population of Sannio, the mild summer weather, people’s kindness, the culinary delights, the artistic and architectural treasures fascinate many tourists that during the year visit the hidden corners of the city.
The itinerary is intended to provide the beauties of Bisaccia and its major points of interest. After visiting the majestic castle (founded in the ninth century) and the stop at archaeological museum, the tourist can go on a pilgrimage to the cathedral dedicated to the birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a religious building from the period of Norman rule. Due to many earthquakes that in the centuries struck these territories, the present cathedral is located in a short distance from the original place, however, it preserves the memory as in its reconstruction has also incorporated the old materials.
Not far away there are two other places of worship: the Church of the Dead and the Chapel of Santa Maria del Carmine. Appreciable is also the Capaldo Palace, birthplace of the Senator of the Kingdom and President of the Supreme Court, Pietro Capaldo (Bisaccia 1845 – Naples 1925). Another significant place to see is the Palazzo Rollo.
Finally in Piazza Convento you can visit the Church of St. Anthony of Padua, patron of the country, originally entrusted to the order of the Franciscans, and the Church of San Michele.
The medieval features of the village are joined with the modern aspects of the city. Indeed, new Bisaccia is a building area constructed after the earthquake of 1930. The regime promoted its reconstruction in a rationalist style and even today on the prospect of some houses you can read the inscription “dux”. Another noteworthy modern building is the Church of the Sacred Heart (1968), which is characterized by the peculiar architectural form, inspired by the aesthetic features of a spaceship and the presence of the bell tower about forty meters high.
Leaving the historic center, nature lovers will enjoy the verdant landscape of Bisaccia.
