Monteverde has become one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, thanks to its nature of small town rich of historical and cultural attractions.
One of the most important events held in Monteverde since 2006 is “The Great Water Show”, a demonstration of dances and games of colours and lights enlivening summer nights all people deciding to spend a few days in this beautiful country. Monteverde, even been a bishopric in the past, still today is very close to religion, so as evidenced by the presence on the territory of several distinctive churches.
Our itinerary starts from Santa Maria Cathedral of Nazareth, built in the early centuries of the year one thousand, and later subject to many transformations due to the countless earthquakes and fires. The building is located near the ancient castle.
Very interesting was the discovery of the Romanesque architecture made up by pointed arches, during the restoration work following the earthquake in 1980.
Next stop is the small church of Santa Maria del Carmine, flanked by the bell tower with Gothic mullioned windows from the XVIII century.
Other steps of our journey are the Church of Sant’Antonio Vico and the Church of San Rocco, formerly designated as the Church of Santa Maria di Carbonaria, recently restored.
Another ancient church, built in the eleventh century, is the Parish Church of St. Mary of Nazareth, although the present structure dates back to the complete rebuilding carried out in 1728 and the subsequent restructuring of 1901.
Last stop of our tour is the Church of the Incoronata, small religious structure rising the Serro mountain, completely isolated from the urban aggregate, but from where you can enjoy a wonderful view. A curious popular custom wants, when arriving on the Church of Incoronata, you to make three laps around the votive church, while reciting the Hail Mary.
